7 Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.
8 This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.
Be careful with the wording in the passage above. Paul is not telling us we have to do good or that doing good things will get us to heaven. This is missing the whole point. Paul is telling us about grace and mercy here. Don’t miss this.
Growing up I would always try to do the right thing. I was a people pleaser. Still somewhat am. I like making other people happy. When I was younger though I would do the right thing in order to be rewarded. I would take out the trash, mow the lawn, do my homework, things like that. I would expect a reward in some way for what I did. I wanted to earn it.
Jesus doesn’t want us to earn anything. We don’t have anything to earn. It has been given to us as a gift. Jesus. He wants us to do good out of His love for us! Does that make sense? He already showed us mercy. He already died on the cross for us. All we need to do is draw near to Him and the good will come.
I could do a million good deeds in my life. It wouldn’t be wrong, but it wouldn’t get me to heaven. What gets you to heaven is admitting you’re a sinner, believing Jesus died for you, and committing your life to Him! ABC. How neat is that? It says in 1 Timothy 4:10, “… because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people…” You are a part of that. Rest in that verse today. You are saved.
Am I trying to earn my way to heaven?
How can I free myself from trying to earn God’s favor?
Dear Lord, help remind us we are your sons/daughters and you are our Father. In that, we have nothing to earn and your love for us is endless. Amen.
Have a great day!
