Hebrews 4:1-2

God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God.

Rest is vital to our well-being. Especially sleep. I know some of you are thinking, “I love sleeping.” Too much sleep can be a bad thing, but lets stay on the other side of this. Science shows long periods of sleep are used to restore and rejuvenate, grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones. I’m not sure what the last one is exactly, but it sounds important. Rest is not only vital to our well-being, but our spiritual life as well.

Genesis 2:2-3, “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” Woah that’s a lot, but simplifying those few verses, God is asking us to rest.

Jon Weece is the pastor of Southland Church in Lexington, KY. I won’t say anymore about the previously stated location. Anyways, he wrote a book called, Jesus Prom, and it gave me a new outlook on Jesus and what he wants for us.

In the book he states, “Rest is a verb that is intentional void of action. Rest requires inaction. While we rest, God works. That’s what makes this verb a challenge to our faith. Do we really believe that God is in control? If we do, we can rest. If we don’t believe God is in control, we ask Him to rest while we attempt to do His work.” So ask yourself the question. Do you believe God is in control?

I know when I am having trouble sleeping and resting, it is because I am worried or stressed. Aka not believing God is in control. Close your eyes and ask God to help you rest. You will be amazed how such a simple prayer can have such a significant impact.

Am I getting enough sleep?

How can I begin to intentionally rest?

Dear Lord, thank you giving us rest in Your Son Jesus. You are so good and we believe you are in control. And with this belief will come rest. Amen.

Have a great day!

C. Lyman
