1 John 1:8-9
8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
The other day I heard someone ask the question, “What scares you most about becoming a Christian?” I will never forget the response, “I am afraid I won’t be able to keep up the Christian image.”
The Christian image is one of perfection. People who are not Christians think we believe we are perfect. Some people who are Christians do think they are perfect. Either way their is an undoubted pressure on some people to uphold this standard of perfection.
We are a bunch of fools. As Christians we need to know we aren’t perfect, but the Man we follow is. We will stumble, sin, and fall short of the glory of God. Jesus loves us anyways. We need to get it out of our head that we need to be perfect in order to be Christian.
Jesus lived, died, and raised from the dead for us not to try and follow the law. But to follow Him. Others need to see we stumble even though we are believers. It will help make use human. Because we are.
Am I trying to keep the Christian image?
Do I accept I’ll never be perfect?
Dear Lord, thank you for being an example to us to follow. Remind us of your victory over sin. Let us use that to fuel us to serve and love others. Amen.
Have a great day!
