Seen.

Matthew 6:1

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Sorry I missed you guys on Wednesday! I got hit HARD with the stomach flu on Tuesday morning at about 4:30am so my mind wasn’t working properly. Hope you all are healthy and excited about the week God has given you and the weekend He has prepared! On to the text!

Character was always defined to me as, “What you do when no one is looking.” It makes sense if you think about it. That is who you really are. There is no ones judgement to sway your decisions or kindness. Just you, yourself, and you. No one to clap if you do something right and no one to ‘boo’ if you do something wrong. Just you and your character waiting to be defined.

A small but profound character ‘tell’ for me is when someone misses the trash can. Whether it be a water bottle or a wrapper, the person looks left, looks right, and has a decision to make. Do I go down and pick it off this dirty floor? OR do I leave it and hope no one saw/hope someone will pick it up? The stakes are high. Knees weak, palms are sweaty.. What will they do…

There are a ton of excuses to be made about why I wouldn’t pick up the trash (It’s not my job, the ground is dirty, I will get it later, someone else will get it, etc.) Ultimately it’s my trash, and even if it isn’t I should be a good citizen right?! So whats the deal with all this trash you keep talking about Colin? Well think about it like this, Would you be more likely to pick something up if someone saw you miss? or how about if you were in front of a large group of people and they were all staring? Of course you would pick it up!

Here’s the deal, God knows your heart. God knows if you are picking up the trash to impress someone or because it is the right thing to do. God knows if you are doing charity work to make yourself look good or if it’s because you care about the kingdom. God knows I promise. This verse is telling us to guard our hearts. Don’t even let your heart get tempted that the act of kindness is making you look good. Do these acts of kindness and give to the needy because you know it makes God smile. Do it because your reward is in heaven. Do it because it is what Jesus would’ve done.

Do I need a heart check?

Why do I do the things I do?

Dear Lord, thank you for always holding us accountable. Thank you for holding us to a higher standard. You are so loving and that is why we are able to love. Amen.

Have a great weekend!

C. Lyman
