1 Corinthians 6:19-20

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

I have heard this verse spoken in my life many times, but there is something different about reading it. This is convicting! I mean it is in the Holy Word of God to treat our bodies as temples! Shoot. I have a few friends who do this better than anyone. They are “The Burdi Brothers.” Both of them are professional baseball players in the Pittsburg Pirates and Chicago White Sox organizations. I have had the pleasure of playing with the two of them throughout my career at Louisville.

The two of them have a strict diet. It consists of getting all of their dietary needs met every single day. It consists of smoothies and crazy vegetables I have never even heard of (I am not a big vegetable guy.) If I am being honest, I thought it was kind of crazy what they were doing. So much effort and it seemed as if we were still functioning on a similar level. I mean, I am doing okay NOT doing that. I am surviving right? I think I am doing okay…

The difference between us is that God didn’t call us to just survive; He called us to thrive. The Burdi Brothers were practicing something HOLY! They were treating their bodies as temples. They understood everything they put into their body had either a positive or negative effect. Whether they were doing it for God or not, they honored God with their bodies. They also had a crazy workout regiment and arm care routines. I am telling you, it is a little insane, but not in God’s eyes.

We are called to honor Jesus in all we do. Jesus is why. This means our hearts, minds, AND bodies. I am guilty of forgetting about my physical body. It seems less important to me for some reason. This clearly isn’t the case and I feel God calling me to make a change.

If you are feeling this way too, if you are feeling Jesus asking you to change how you treat your body; would you join me in this prayer?

Dear Lord, I pray you would reveal the changes that needs to be made in how we treat our body. Whether it is our eating habits, working out, or respecting our purity, I pray you give us the strength to make the change. Constantly remind us of the “why” and that is your son Jesus. We love you and praise you. Amen!

Have a great day!

C. Lyman

  1. This is truly a VERY good point! I wasn’t sure what direction it was going to go at first from the short preview on your home page, but I am not disappointed that I opened and read it! It’s certainly a topic that I don’t hear taught much, or even discussed for that matter, but it is definitely an important topic nonetheless! Well said, my friend, well said!
