Colossians 1:11

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.

Have you ever felt overwhelmingly busy? Almost like every second of your time is taken up by a task, a person, or an event. As I was reflecting on where I am in my life right now; I find myself with the same answer, “busy.”

I have to be careful because busy can sound like a bad thing. I believe what we say has profound impact on our day to day lives. The word “busy” has such a negative connotation. I will catch myself saying it often. “Hows life Colin?” someone will say. “Oh its good, really busy!” I will reply. I feel God tapping me on the shoulder like, “Bro, you’re not busy! I want you to shift your thoughts… you have been given beautiful gifts that fill your time.”

Keeping this in perspective has been key to me climbing out of this negative state of busyness. At any rate, having our time filled can really leave us feeling empty. I was talking with God yesterday in the car and felt Him reminding me, “Hey, we haven’t had a lot of time together lately. Colin, you haven’t just sat in silence in a long time. Lets do that together.” If I am being honest, I still need to answer that call.

I did it to myself, but my life is filled with beautiful gifts that fill my time. Baseball Instruction, FCA, Work, Church, Friendships, Graduate School, Finances, Fun time, etc. All of these are beautiful things, but if I am not careful they can become busy things.

You may not be busy right now, but I promise at some point in your life you will be. So what do we do? How do we combat the “busyness?” What is the solution? Well I could just say, “JESUS” and walk away, but that would be too abrupt. Here is what has helped me, spending time with Jesus daily.

I am not perfect AT ALL, not even close, but I do my best to draw near to Jesus daily. I think this is the most important thing we can do in our lives. Our relationship with Jesus sets the foundation for our relationships, future, job, you name it. Spend time listening to worship music daily, praying at night, reading about Jesus. These aren’t boxes to check, but experiences to be had to grow you closer to your Savior.

My challenge for you is to pick one new way to grow closer to Jesus. Write it down. And go for it. Please feel free to comment and encourage others with new ways to grow in their relationship with Jesus.

Dear Lord, thank you for your Word and how it excites us. We are so thankful you give us strength and wisdom to live our lives with. Please give us this same strength and wisdom to draw near to you daily. We love you. Amen.

Have a great week!

C. Lyman

  1. “you have been given beautiful gifts that fill your time.” What a wonderful way to put it. I was JUST telling someone how my time was spent chasing my junior from one activity to the other and immediately thought how I will not have much more chasing to do and it made me sad. Now, I will look at it differently.
